Walk for Weltands

Walk for Wetlands is COPE LLC’s first organized fundraiser.  Let’s have some fun with our friends and families. Get involved and support the appeal to the zoning changes the Board of Supervisors approved while we were left out in the cold.  Funds will be used to fund legal expenses and expert environmental witnesses.

What is a Walk-a-thon?

The Walk-a-thon is our community's awareness fundraiser in which families, friends, and neighbors pledge money to support the participants in the Walk-a-thon. To ensure proper social distancing, each participant will walk (or jog, skip, run, swim, bike etc.) on their own or in small family or friend groups and track/tally the number of laps completed during July 6th-19th.

Why are we having a Walk-a-thon?

The Wegmans project is incompatible with our community’s large residential subdivisions. There are significant concerns that wetlands on the parcel have been underestimated using a classification rarely used in this geographical area. Hanover COPE (Citizens Organized for the Protection of The Environment), is an LLC formed by neighbors who on June 5th filed an appeal to reverse Hanover’s decision in zoning changes.  On July 20th, The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality will hold a public hearing. Our goal is to raise awareness and at least $30,000, but ANY donation is welcome!  If every neighbor raises $100, we can reach our goal and more!  Donations will be used to fund legal representation and expert witnesses.

How do we raise money?

In the next few weeks, each participant can obtain pledges in support of his/her walk-a-thon efforts.  Pledges can be made as a one time donation, or on a per lap (neighborhood street) basis.  Please help by collecting pledges through your participant webpage.  You can email family, relatives, friends, co-workers, etc. for support right from the webpage.  Posting on social media is another option!  Taking photos and posting #walkforwetlands is encouraged! No time to ask for pledges?  You can make a donation instead! Please keep in mind that we can meet our community goal if each participant raises $100.
